I actually did this before the Bears played the Rams, but then I was like... WHAT AM I THINKING?
The first game had yet to be played, and here I was being all negative.
Then, as luck would have it, the night of the game was also our anniversary, so I kinda wasn't able to watch.
Instead I got a text from a buddy, Greg, in Los Angeles.
I used to lose money to him whenever the Bears played the Rams back in the '80s.
I think I won once.
Anyway, our text convo went like this:
GREG: Order restored.
ME: If that's about the Bears... it's my anniversary so I'm not allowed to watch.
ME: I assume Dalton is struggling and Nagy is calling idiotic plays.
GREG: You must be telepathic.
I wish I were a Matt Nagy fan, but I'm not.
And I actually feel terrible for Andy Dalton.
The O line?
Ryan Pace's 300 pound Left Tackle and #2 Bears pick Teven Jenkins had to have back surgery?
Wait he had back issues through college? And he's probably out for the SEASON? That's never happened with the Bears, right?
Oh yeah... #1 Bears '15 draft pick Kevin White had shin splints that were actually a fracture.
And now the almost 40 year old backup LT, Jason Peters, lasted half the Rams game before injuring a quad.
Then his backup Larry Borom injured his ankle, so he's out as well.
Remember this Nick Foles quote?
“Sometimes play calls come in and I know I don’t have time to execute that play call. I’m the one out here getting hit. Sometimes the guy calling the plays, Matt Nagy, doesn’t know how much time there is back here.”
I'm afraid Dalton will just be a repeat of Jay Cutler running for his life all over again.
Maybe Nagy will switch to younger legs of Justin Fields, because Nick Foles might be less agile than Dalton.
Whatever, I just don't really have confidence in Bears management.
Okay, the Cubs.
Kris Bryant was at Wrigley with the Giants and they did the tribute video thing and you saw Bryant's emotional reaction.
I switched to the Mets/Yankees and right when I turned it on, Javy Baez hit a single and was standing on first base talking to Anthony Rizzo.
Felt kinda like this:
Okay not with the actual tears but you get what I mean.
It freaking hurts.
Meanwhile, on the reality front... Patrick Wisdom tied Bryant's rookie homer record.
You can see it here.
There's something about Wisdom and his perpetual smile that reminds me of like a '50s leading man.
Hard not to root for him, and with 16 games to go he'll probably get that record.
Let's see.. not good: Jason Heyward went on the 7-day IL concussion protocol after he crashed into Brandon Crawford the other day.
Good: MLB's #14 overall prospect Brennen Davis got promoted to Triple A and hit 2 homers in his first 2 at bats! (MLB's Tyler Maun article here.)
Lastly, I got a text from Cardinal Fan Dickie last night saying "Go Cubs!"
He got his wish.
The Cubs beat the Phils 6-3, the Cards beat the Mets 7-6 in extras (El Mago was almost the hero) and now the Cards are #2 in the Wild Card.
They're way behind the Dodgers and juuust ahead of the Reds by a half game, and then it's the Pads, Phils and Mets.
But the Cards have 7 games left vs the Cubs, so...
There's not alot to ask of this season except to wreck all the fun in St. Louis.
Here's hoping Wisdom, Contreras, Schwindel, Happ, Duffy and co. can pull off some pain-inducing wins in the next couple weeks.
