Well thanks, Adbert Alzolay.
One more lopsided loss in Atlanta with crap pitching and bats stuck on the "K" setting and my heart would just bust in a billion pieces.
I'm not even kidding.
This is not how this thing is supposed to go.
The Cubs drafted the most talented prospects at the top of the list and they were gonna stay together for years to come, bringing championship after championship.
Sustainable growth and stuff.
Instead I'm 6 feet under, reaching a muddy hand up through the earth to grasp at any freaking thing I can.
Turned out to be Adbert.
And his filthy slider.
Or slidERS because he's apparently learned to change the speed and shape of that pitch to become a couple different ones.
That are hard to hit.
So hard that the Braves could only plate 2 runs in his 6 innings, which was astonishing considering the 23 runs in the previous 3 games.
But even then with an 8-2 lead, when Boog or JD said the word "Tepera"... you and I both went oh god.
Oh god no please not Tepera.
In 13 Tepera pitches the Braves had one out, scored one and had 2 more on with red hot Freddie Freeman coming up, when Boog or JD said the words "The Sheriff"... and you and I both went oh god.
Oh thank GOD it's Chafin!
In 6 pitches to Freeman, the Cubs were out of a jam with a double play.
I'm serious though, I could totally feel it slipping and that was something I could not handle.
Luckily right about here, I was deluged with texts from everybody talking about the Bears trading up to get Ohio State QB Justin Fields. Ryan Pace, in a bid to save his neck and possibly ruin all my fun for the next bunch of winters, gave up this: "The Giants received Chicago's first-round (No. 20) and fifth-round picks this year, and the Bears' first- and fourth-rounders next year."
Maybe that's cool, at least I hope so.
Whatever, I missed seeing Trevor Megill pitch, which was good because it would just have added panic - WHO THE HELL IS TREVOR MEGILL?
(Googled and found out he came from the Padres in... the 2019 Rule 5 Draft, and took Rowan Wick's place since Wick got placed on the 60-day IL.)
Then I thought it would be a calm bottom of the 9th with Kimbel coming in to shut it down.
Everything pretty okay til the Enormous (5'10", 268 lbs) Kung Fu Panda, Pablo Sandoval, struck out for out #3.
But the ball got away from Willy and.. you know. YOU CAN'T GIVE THESE GUYS AN EXTRA OUT.
Ronald Acuna Jr. is as scary as any ballplayer in the game.
He flew out.
Cubs 9 Braves 3.
I was freaking out with a 6-run lead and one out to go.
I am longing to... not be like that.
Do not lose to the Reds.
Let me experience peace with a victory or three, because on Monday the Dodgers will be here.
So... Go Cubs.
