As far as you can go.
The Cubs have been the team on the bottom, the Cards the team on top.
It's the history of my brain.
It's the culture of the rivalry.
It occurred to me that, should the Cubs win this series and leave the Cardinals beneath them for the 4th year in a row.. the actual culture might start to change.
The way baseball fans actually think of the rivalry.
Where the automatic/reflexive/immediate thought about who the underdog in the series is might actually be shifting.
Not just from a game to game way of thinking, but from an overall way of thinking.
But first, these last 3 games.
The Greatest Rivalry in Sports.
Starting at 1:20 on a Friday with returning from the dead St. Louis hero Adam Wainwright vs skinny unassuming baseball chess master Kyle Hendricks.
This is the shit.
The main course.
It's the game you dream about in April.
Everybody's been so freaked out by the Cubs this year.
How can their stats be so good?
How can they be in first place?
None of it makes sense because my eyes tell me they have so many holes, they're so lacking, they can't hit, they can't pitch, they have no bullpen, they're injured...
Well, they are in first and they do have amazing stats.
Their reputation is mostly that of elite high draft picks with high ceilings and lotsa tools.
But nobody has a nickname like "Nails", right?
This year, they're also showing guts.
The stuff you don't ordinarily associate with this team because they have such good baseball skills.
Kris Bryant looks like Adonis rather than Mike Tyson, but that guy's come back from a fastball head-beaning and an injured shoulder.
You know he's been playing in some serious pain for most of this season.
Javier Baez is called "The Magician", but he is the most terrifying man on 2018's base path.
And what about mental toughness?
The toll taken when you're a Cub and you find out that the pitcher you were depending on to be the Stopper has a wrecked elbow and instead won't have anything to do with anything.
That's where Joe Maddon comes in.
Did you see that last shot of the Pittsburgh dugout last night - the shot of pure hatred coming from Clint Hurdle?
Anyway, what you doing this afternoon?
PS: Last night. Cubs 3 Pirates nothin. Jon Lester Of Course. But Carl Edwards. If he can just keep doing that, the Cubs will go farther than you think. He's so key.
