Man what a dagger Willson Contreras can be.
Yesterday the Cubs go up by 1 in the bottom of the 7th and now it's time to close the door.
In comes Ian Kintzler to face Bryce Harper.
But Kintzler has been... I have big hopes with him this year because I kinda have to.
He quickly gets Harper down by 2, then two fouls.
And then 4 straight balls (3 of which could EASILY have been called strikes).
Not out of my mind yet.
Even with the 2 immediate strikes, walking Harper isn't the worst thing that can happen with him.
Then it's 19 year old Juan Soto.
He walks on 7 pitches.
I put a pillow over my face and scream (I had a doc appointment and went home after).
Guys on 1st and 2nd, nobody out and here comes Carl Edwards Jr.
I'm not one of those guys who has the ability to watch the whole field like a coach.
Especially when I've got a pillow over my mouth and I'm freaking out.
So when Willson Contreras catches the ball and whips it over to first and Soto is out, even though I yelled with joy... at the same time my jaw was falling to the ground.
Rizzo wasn't holding him on the bag.
Harper was on 2nd.
Instead, Rizzo's standing behind Soto and breaks for the bag when Edwards throws the pitch.
Totally called play - they must have a secret signal the Cardinals are trying to steal even as we speak.
For Soto it was the 2nd time getting picked off - Kyle Hendricks had gotten him earlier.
Talk about a public wedgie.
Anyway, all the 2-walk angst to start the inning turns into a mild gas pain that disappears completely in the next minute as Edwards gets the next two outs.
Baseball is so awesome.
That Jeremy Hellickson guy had a no hitter going thru 5 2/3 innings, while the Nat bats had like 50 hits already.
Nobody was feeling very confident until after Anthony Rizzo ruined Hellickson's mind with the 13 pitch walk.
Then Hellickson walked the bases loaded and had to go take a shower.
Next inning, Rizzo would walk again with the bases loaded and the Cubs had the 3-2 lead that lasted all the way through Pedro Strop's 9th save.
That game went from pure dread to a gigantic woo HOOOOOOO.
Okay today at 3:05 we'll see if Jon Lester can stop trending the wrong way.
Here's the painting maybe 3/4 done...
