Man, been awhile since I had to do a gif like this.
A 5 game losing streak on the West Coast, the last two L's to the San Diego Padres.
The last place San Diego Padres.
The team that gave us Steve Garvey and all the pleasant memories of 1984.
IT'S SO GALLING!
There's so much to worry about and so much that can happen and trades and smart management and expectations and all that, but here's the thing.
We've never been here before.
None of us have ever experienced this... thing where we're the top dogs expected to win it all again, but instead struggling.
It's weird, and nobody really knows what to say or do except panic.
Kyle Schwarber and Addison Russell aren't hitting like we thought they would, but they're also some of the youngest players in the bigs.
Kyle Schwarber just turned 24.
Did you see his homer last night?
Did you see his reaction in the dugout with all the hugging and big smile?
That's the exact same look you see out at your neighborhood park when some kid on a team sponsored by the local State Farm guy gets a hit.
Lots of the Cubs we depend on most are just kids, and we're watching them grow.
Also, I'm hearing people getting frustrated with Joe Maddon and him being stubborn and all that.
I remembered a story and just found it.
He was managing the Rays in '11, and they started out the season 1-8 and (from here)...
"...But his most out-there speech may have been on the plane from Tampa Bay to Chicago after a rough start to the 2011 season when he got a bottle of Charbay whiskey and a sleeve of plastic cups and led a toast to "the best" winless team in baseball history."
If there's anybody who can turn this around, it's Joe Maddon.
So um... like I said the other day... freak out. Do what you have to do to keep your sanity, but also know that there's a depth of talent on this team and...
Surely there's going to be some kind of trade for pitching, and we're all gonna moan about whoever it is that goes.
But I'm just saying, it's not as bad as it seems.
A couple wins, maybe a streak... I'm just going to keep believing in Theo and Jed and let baseball happen.
Unless they lose today.
Then, I'm gonna lose it.
