Know what I did?
Looked at stats.
Among starting NL pitchers (with at least 35 at-bats, which is just a random number conveniently chosen by me for this post), our guy Travis Wood is the best bat.
Slash is .267/.298/.511
In 45 at-bats.
Next best is Madison Baumgarner at .265/.302/.490 in 49 at-bats.
Wood has 12 hits.
Know who only has 8?
Wood's got 3 homers.
The same number as Casey McGehee.
Travis Wood is slugging .511.
That hack Ryan Braun's only slugging .496.
You think that's an unfair comparison?
Wood's OPS is .809, which is better than Matt Holliday, Hunter Pence, Chase Utley and Adrian Gonzalez.
And from what I hear Wood can beat all those guys in Call of Duty, Car Bingo, and the Hokey Pokey.
Okay enough of that.
Yesterday, Travis Wood got a hit and scored a run but way more welcome was this: he gave up only 4 hits and one unearned thru 6 innings.
The wind was blowing in which of course helps, but it was still a nice performance.
We were driving back from Wisconsin listening to At Bat thru the car speakers, and between Ron and Pat they must have said something about Wood's batting average about 10 times.
For a pitcher, he really is pretty special with the bat and gives you one more thing to look forward to when he's playing.
The Cubs beat the Rays 3-2 in the 12th when Anthony Rizzo got down on one knee to hit a low outside one over the head of whoever Maddon had playing right by that time.
Knocked in Ryan Sweeney for the walkoff.
