There are so many cool things about this besides the contending part.
The whole deal - the hard fought... sort of opportunity we're getting.
Fans I'm talking about.
You and me.
We get to watch a team grow up basically from scratch.
There's been lots of angst about who will be the leader of the clubhouse - what kind of personality will the team take on, who will these kids look to for guidance besides management.
Maybe Anthony Rizzo will be that guy.
Even though he still looks it, he's not that baby faced kid any more.
You see him flip into a dugout making a catch of a foul ball - the one that wasn't an out because he flipped completely out of the playing field.
You see him going hard into second base.
You see him crowding the plate, dictating his zone.
On the field, Anthony Rizzo is one tough dude, and a really good example for others to follow.
He's already walking the walk, and with this quote?
Maybe he is that guy.
Do I believe they'll be contending next year?
Not really (of course you never know but whatever).
So even if Rizzo is just practicing for the future... I mean, what would it feel like to be the guy with 30 homers on the infant team letting that quote roll off your tongue?
How does it make you feel?
It's been an abstract thought for years.
A Chicago Cub saying things like, "We need to take care of our division first" is just like... HUH?
WHERE DID THAT COME FROM?
I HAVEN'T EVEN THOUGHT ANYTHING REMOTELY LIKE THAT IN FOREVER!
God is it delicious.
Okay, it's Jorge Soler Day in Cincinnati, even if nobody in Ohio will admit it.
If you watched last night, you saw Ryan Sweeny go out with a hammy.
In came Matt Szczur and they didn't miss a beat - in fact he made an incredible catch, got a hit and a walk and scored too.
Rizzo left early with a twinge in his lower back.
Fingers crossed it ain't nothin'.
Cubs have won 4 in a row, prospects are doing well, just... try to think of a time with any more promise than you feel right now.
ps: I got the quote from Wittenmyer at the Sun Times. Totally reluctant to point you there because he's been the King Mope (I won't even talk about the other Sun Times guy) about the entire Theo process, but here it is.
