Sooo...why not hang around another year and see what happens next with this Cubs thing?
According to Jeff Samardzija, a big part of the reason he left that other game with the oblong ball was because he wanted to play baseball in Chicago.
At the time, how was he to know that the guy who signed him would turn out to be a giant General Mismanager?
That the Cubs would be sold to a new guy who decided to hire a GM with the vision and intestinal fortitude to take a multi-year mulligan in Chicago and completely re-do the team?
There's apparently been talk of a long-term contract for Samardzija, but if you put yourself in his position - why would you do that?
Why not just dog ear this particular page in Cubs' history?
Sign a 1-year contract, hang around until the page turns and see what'll be written on the next.
No, I'm not talking about a Championship season in '14.
Probably Upper Management will decide that it's too early to bring up The Future because The Cubs Way states that Thou Shalt Not Rush Prospects, and don't forget about starting up free agent clocks and maximizing club control.*
But if you're Jeff Samardzija and you hang around another year, you'll know more things.
You'll be privy to what the Cubs might really become in the next couple years.
And that might just be irrisistible.
I mean, I have no idea what'll happen this season - maybe they trade him.
But right now I'm happy Samardzija's still a Cub for the purely selfish reason that he'll make my summer more entertaining.
*Probably just like you, I am praying that one or some of the guys - Baez, Olt, Bryant, Solar, Alcantara...SOMEBODY please force their way onto the Big League club. It would help our collective sanity like a billion percent.
