Here's a little thing guaranteed to waste a little time so that pitchers and catchers might report a little faster, at least in our heads.
I was writing something about Dan Vogelbach, and I couldn't remember if it was a "ch" or "ck" at the end.
So I pulled out my phone and asked Siri, "How do you spell Vogelbach?"
And her reply was: "I didn't find anything for 'How do you spell full Goldbach.'"
Then I asked her who Dan Vogelbach was.
The answer is below, along with as many Cubs as I could think of off the top of my head.
So anyway, Siri actually is useful for some things, but she sure missed the boat on this one.
Here's one reason - Baseball Perspectus came out with it's list of the top 101 prospects, and 6 (edit 7) of them are Cubs.
If you're a baseball player, this is pretty serious early fame.
Javier Baez is tops at #4.
Now think about this...
Here are the all time top one hundred prospects from Baseball America.
Just run down that list and tell me how many Cubs you see in the top ten.
(You have to go all the way back to the Mark Prior, Kerry Wood and Corey Patterson days.)
That's because the system is SOOOO much better.
This year, Baez is #4, Kris Bryant is #17, (edit - Albert Almora is #25), Jorge Solar is #45, CJ Edwards is #81, Arismendy Alcantara is #83, and Pierce Johnson is #91.
Here's a quote from Baseball Perspectus' Jason Parks (you may have to be a subscriber for that link): "Through the amateur draft, trades, and the international market, the Cubs have built one of the strongest systems in baseball, with high-impact talent that everybody knows and better depth than people might realize. The farm will rank no. 2 in the minors, just behind the Twins and just ahead of the Pirates."
Theo Epstein took over on October 12, 2011, so the Cubs went from one of the worst to almost the best in about 28 months.
And while I don't think Siri will ever understand "Jeff Samardzija", here's hoping these names are famous in the very near future.
(note - commenter Evan pointed out that I forgot Albert Almora. Doh! So I edited in bold.)
