Not that there isn't a ton of interesting actual baseball action to be paying attention to, but I would really really like the Cubs to somehow get Joe Girardi.
I totally realize I'm ALL set up for disappointment, but you know, I'm also hoping Northwestern beats Ohio State this weekend.
Did you know that all the other coaches are gone too?
They let Dave McKay go yesterday - there's no Chris Bosio or Rob Deer or any of those guys.
That last game I went to against the Pirates - the last thing I did at Wrigley this year was buy one of those Topps team packs on my way out.
I looked at it last night and there were 17 cards in there, one of which is titled "Wrigley Field".
That's pretty sad.
Of the remaining 16, these were the only Cubs left: Wellington Castillo, Anthony Rizzo, Starlin Castro, Scott Baker, Jeff Samardzija, Darwin Barney, Luis Valbuena, and Travis Wood.
(Well, I guess Josh Vitters and Brett Jackson still count, but...)
Anyway, it's SUPER transparent, this Joe Girardi stuff.
The roster is kind of not so great, nobody thinks they'll be any good next year, but if they get Joe Girardi?
Then the guys runnin' the show can point at him and say HEY, WE GOT JOE GIRARDI.
Well, that'd be something at least.
And if they don't get Girardi, after all this public noise?
I don't really know.
It's just the stupid manager, I mean I'm not even talking about players.
There's Girardi, who represents experience and winning and World Series and Chicago ties and all that.
Then there's other guys, and I've heard names but can't really remember right now.
But the thought of Theo and Jed putting some new guy through their "interview" process to see if he's good enough to go through what Sveum went through kind of turns my stomach.
I do think it's going to be better next year... but what if Starlin Castro continues to regress... what if Anthony Rizzo doesn't get any better... will they chuck some manager under the bus?
I guess if it's Girardi, no way.
If it's just some guy, why not?
How come I always start off with some kind of simple thought and end up just confusing myself?
I was only gonna talk about Brian Cashman and Theo throwing down and Girardi being in the catbird seat and...maybe there'll be resolution today or maybe the Cubs just can't talk til the end of the month.
