Being a Cub Fan, one has a tendency to wish that time would fly so the Cubs could get to their trades and the team can hurry up and get better.
HURRY!!!
But you know what happened?
Our bikes got stolen awhile back, and we went to Rudy's Bikeshop on Irving on Saturday with insurance money to replace them.
Yeah it's more expensive, but it's so much nicer buying a bike from a small shop.
It just is.
I prefer that kind of bike that's really heavy with big tires and a giant seat and no gears.
It's only good for one thing, which is not going fast.
I rode it into the park and suddenly everything came into focus.
"IT'S SUMMER, YOU IDIOT!" I thought.
I've put so much time and energy into being impatient that I'm gonna miss the summer if I don't watch out.
When's the last time you just did nothing but put the Cubs on a transistor radio?
I went on a shoot in NY with a producer who enlightened me about the magic of India Pale Ale.
I may have mentioned it.
It's like the opposite of your basic American beer - the kind you drink in a hurry because if it gets warm the taste gets progressively worse.
An IPA is fantastic because it's slow.
The taste gets more interesting the warmer it gets.
Plus, it's heavier and way more expensive, so you want to enjoy it a bit more.
Like Darwin Barney, who at first glance just looks like another Cub 2nd baseman with a decent glove and mediocre bat.
But if you slow down and try to appreciate him, you'll note that his is maybe the most solid glove in the infield. Maybe the best defensive 2nd basemen in the league.
And once in awhile he does something remarkable, like hit a little 2-run dinger to win a game and complete a sweep against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
It should be a crazy couple weeks coming up, and hopefully we'll all witness Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer at their best as they wrangle in some new young and under control talent for the future of our favorite team.
But try to remember that it's also more than halfway through summer.
Relax and enjoy it.
PS: You'll note that I finally figured out how to get the little Facebook "like", Tweet, and Pin buttons at the bottom of the post. Please don't hesitate to push those things!
The above 2nd baseman stats page I got off of ESPN just this morning.
