Remember last year?
The selection of pitchers?
Carlos Silva? Braden Looper?
I'm feeling a bit better about this year.
Dempster, Garza, Maholm, Samardzija (weird putting him here, no?), and...Rodrigo Lopez, Randy Wells, or Chris Volstad.
You guys know I'm a big Randy Wells fan, since his dad coached our hs football team, so I'm kinda pulling for Randy just for sentimental reasons.
Chris Volstad has just made me so freaking happy because...it's because he's here that we haven't had to use words lately like "crazy" or "punch" or "anger management" or any names starting with "Z".
Plus, Volstad has pitched...unexpectedly fantastic.
Rodrigo, I'm sorry but you just remind me too much of Mike Quade.
This is WAAY too oversimplified, but think about what Theo and Jed have done here by really beefing up the pitching. (Yeah, you can say they picked up a bunch of 5th starters, but still.)
Back when my son was in T-ball, he had a pretty smart coach.
That guy had the kids practice fielding aLOT more than batting, even though batting was clearly the most fun thing for the kids.
And you know what?
He won alot of games because he could get the other team out.
Of course you gotta score runs to win, but...
in retrospect (and given the choices out there), I think it was super smart of the New Guys to beef up the pitching first.
I never want to see anybody even resembling Doug Davis pitch against the Red Sox EVER AGAIN IN MY LIFE.
