"Hi yo, Silva...AWAY!!!"
With an emphasis on that "away" part.
It's crazy I know, but I actually did this drawing in 1968 and even copyrighted it before I even knew there was such a thing!
Somehow I must have known this day, Carlos Silva's judgement day, was coming.
If you're too young to remember this catchphrase, go about 55 seconds into this awesome video:
Carlos Silva is going to get another start today, and you have to think it's make or break for him.
And if he gets shelled again?
Bruce Miles suggests here: "With the New York Mets having released Luis Castillo and Oliver Perez and eating their contracts, you have to wonder if the Cubs wouldn't do the same thing with Silva."
Doesn't that seem like the right thing to do?
New manager, new vibe. Why have him hanging around?
He's the fallout from Milton Bradley, and he's yet another player who screwed the game by somehow lucking into a gigantic contract and then turning into a turd.
If the Cubs do dump him and go with guys they're trying to develop like Andrew Cashner, I'd be thinking well, they're trying to get better for the future.
And I'd like to see that.
Now, I'm not forgetting Silva's fabulous and freakish start to last season which was very nice, but if he goes away I'd be just fine with that.
Okay so back to the Lone Ranger.
Those words, "Hiyo Silver. AWAY!" either by chance or choice captured your imagination.
Most of the time as I recall, he would say it when his work was done.
Like he'd shoot the bad guy and say "Hiyo Silva Away!", ride off and the lady in the scene would go, "Who was that masked man?"
Much later when "Toy Story" first came out - and they're like the best writers in Hollywood over at Pixar - they had Buzz Lightyear do the exact same kind of catchphrase, "To infinity...AND BEYOND!"
It adds a mystique to the character, like they always have another awesome adventure to go experience.
The Cubs have had, "Let's play two", "In Dusty We Trusty", "It's Gonna Happen", and "Sadly We Got Bradley".
They really need to work on that catchphrase thing.
