Really, I don't think anybody but some people in Naples wanted the Cubs to move there for Spring Training.
Maybe Lou Piniella since he's a Florida resident, but he's not signing a 25 year contract like these Mesa guys are.
It says in this article that the Cubs bring 52 million dollars to the AZ economy, which is astonishing considering Spring Training is about 5 1/2 weeks.
So these Mesa guys are gonna build 4 new practice fields, a new 15,000 seat ballpark which the Cubs get to design, give the Cubs naming rights to the field, control of all signage, and they get to choose a new Arizona State Bird.
My prediction is that "Hohokam" will somehow get beat out by something new.
Like "Wrigley West" or "Captain Morgan's Meadow".
Anyway, given that there are sharks, humidity, big bugs, alligators, and hurricanes in Florida, this is pretty good news.
Man, go check out ESPN MLB - it's loaded with Cubs and Mark McGwire stuff.
Yesterday Fergie Jenkins demanded more apologizing from Mark McGwire, and McGwire came to the Cardinals Convention and got a giant applause. All I can say is if Sammy Sosa came to the Cubs Convention the reaction from the crowd might be as loud only with a little different tone. It's a shame - the whole thing is a shame, but there you go.
Oh, and I was kidding about the Cubs choosing a new AZ State Bird, by the way.
