The kid deserves a W.
Simple as that.
Tall order today going against surf-hair Bronson Arroyo.
And certainly if the Cubs play like they did yesterday well, it probably won't happen.
But Randy Wells has been a bright spot, a reason to hope, this season.
Seriously, I've never seen a bigger group of triple A misfits in my life.
Randy's the converted catcher who couldn't hit, Scales is the career minor leaguer, Fox is the guy more suited for 16 inch softball...
But I like 'em.
Who knows how long you get the big chance?
GET WELLS A WIN!
Here's something small world-ish.
You all know I went to high school in Belleville, where Randy's is from.
I read an article in the St. Louis Post Dispatch about Randy, and it said he comes from a family of big jocks going way back.
And his dad's name was Forry (Forry jr. in the article).
A bell went off.
That's a name you don't forget, Forry.
He was one of our football coaches at Belleville East.
I looked in my '74 yearbook, and there he is.
I asked my buddy Sloppy John Messbarger about it, and he says Forry was his early 20's here.
Math tells me that can't be Randy on his lap, but John's kids know Randy and say he's a real nice guy, too.
Here's a snippet of the team photo.
No, those guys on either side of me aren't real big, I was just kinda small.
Must have inspired whoever signed my book to write that rather tongue in cheek comment...
Messbarger is #62, current Belleville West Maroons head coach Ric Johns is #53.
Some of my best friends growing up.
If you're reading this, hi guys.
