Lisa Bright and Deb Klonk were in my office showing me some print ads when I heard words that were obviously there, hanging in the air, but didn't quite make sense.
"Ryan Theriot has just hit a grand slam!"
Was that Pat Hughes?
The crowd noise coming from Emily's radio made it sound pretty real.
"Did he just say Ryan Theriot hit a grand slam?" I asked.
"I think he did." said Lisa.
Turned out Pat did, because Ryan had.
Incredible.
This game - Rich Harden sounded the opposite of his last outing, where I thought: damn that guy's in complete control.
Rich didn't even go 4 yesterday.
His last bit in the game, he walked 2 guys and hit the third.
Soyonara (is that spelled right?).
Cubs were down 5 to 1.
This game is another disaster, I figured.
So I forgot about it, although the radio was on...
And then, the 6th inning and the grand slam.
At Denny's, that would be pancakes, eggs, bacon and sausage.
They gave 'em away awhile back.
I wonder how many people came in, got the freebie, and didn't tip.
Anyway, the Cubs completely stumble thru (Marmol with the walks, Gregg with the Gregg) the final innings and actually come up with the 8-6 win over the Marlins.
In what must seem like an outer body experience, Rule 5 relief guy David Patton, in less than a year, has gone from single A ball to his first W in the bigs, and it happens at Wrigley Field!
You could retire now, son, and have a better story than me to tell your grand kids.
Terrible Ted in a couple hours, and it's beautiful out.
Go Cubs.
