That's where Kerry Wood's gonna be in 2009, closing games for the Cleveland Indians.
Years ago, I was with a party of people just out having fun - dinner, couple bars, that kinda stuff.
We walked into someplace long since closed on LaSalle, and on a corner television I learned that Gary Fencik had retired.
One of my all-time favorite Bears.
They showed a still-shot of him for about 5 seconds: "In other news, Bears safety Gary Fencik retired today."
Had to leave the party.
Walked down to the lake, thought about all the plays I'd seen that guy make.
Today I saw this little blurb.
"Kerry Wood passes physical, officially signs with Indians."
So, taking a minute here.
Think about all the amazing stuff we got to see Kerry Wood do.
Of course there will always be the injuries, but one of the best things about last season was seeing him come back re-invented as a closer.
And it's a cryin' shame he never got The Ring as a member of the Chicago Cubs...
Not that I'm large-headed enough to think you might read this, but if you do Kerry, we wish you the best of luck.
Thank you for your 20 strike-out game, for your breathtaking fastball, for your loyalty to us, for smashing Sammy's boom box with a baseball bat, for signing that ball for my son Wyatt, and for being both a bad ass and a good guy - one of the coolest Cubs ever.
May you pitch as long as you feel like it.
