There he is, our closer Kerry Wood.
When he came in to conquer the game last night, everything was exactly as it should be.
9th inning, 9 Oriole whiffs, 3 outs and it was over.
He was throwing 98.
Ninety eight.
Giving away those fastballs like they were free, but you know they're not.
Nobody's gone through more pain or worked harder or been more brilliant than Kerry Wood.
Every time I see Kerry Wood pitch I feel hope and strength.
And I feel lucky.
If this season goes according to plan, he'll be the one I'm happiest for.
Because it's gonna be Kerry that carries us there.
He takes his 20th save as the Cubs and Ted Lilly beat the Orioles at Wrigley 7-4.
Lilly got a couple hits too - I think we watched his average jump about 100 points last night.
And you couldn't even wish for a nicer night.
You know how summers go.
One minute it's the 4th of July and then it's the freaking end of August and you're like, where'd everything go?
So this year, making the conscious effort to stop and smell that steaming hot dog with grilled onions.
I think it'll make the magic last longer.
Worked last night anyway.
