He had a cup of coffee (up for 7 games, 2 at bats) in ’05 and hit nothing so we won’t count that…but Mike Fontenot is doing something that nobody does right now.
In 26 games he’s hitting .365 with 3 homers, 3 triples, 8 doubles and 16 RBIs.
Pretty crazy numbers for a rookie.
He’s just come up and played like he belongs here.
Will he cool off?
Probably, but go watch him now.
‘Cause if he doesn’t and keeps playing this good…maybe you can help me here – what other rookie is playing this well?
When’s the last time there was a Cub rookie of the year?
(I’d tell you but it’s probably a jinx.)
Yeah, too early to talk but it’s a nice thought.
A little while back he went 4 for 4.
Lou Piniella said in his post game interview that Fontenot doesn’t talk much but that “he’s telling me he wants to play.”
Nice.
Plus there’s the whole thing about playing on the same college world series team (LA State) as Ryan Theriot, which is impossibly cool.
And last night he went 3 for 5 with an RBI to help the Cubs beat Washington 4-2 on a night the Brewers lost, so now the Cubs are 4.5 games out.
This is SO much more fun than May.
One last thing - Wyatt and I were at the last Sean Marshall outing, and it was hurl (as in throw up)-worthy.
But still, this kid's an important part...
Joe at View From The Bleachers has some smarter things to say about him.
One more last thing.
My dad's coming out from AZ for the Astros series.
Gotta start thinking about the "I HATE THE ASTROS PAGE" for this year.
